The East End Arts Club is having its latest exhibition this week. ‘Said, why eggs?!’ is an exploration of the alphabet by 26 different artists. There’s a great selection of people involved and affordable limited edition artworks from £30 – £150, so it’s well worth popping down. The show opens this Thursday 7th May 6-9pm and then Saturdays (12-4pm) and Sundays (12-6pm) until 31st May (Weekdays by appointment only). It’s located just off Redchurch Street, at the top of Brick Lane:

I have mentioned this company before when talking about the popularity of the alphabet as Somerville Scarves do a great alphabet cushion. Having just looked at their website again this evening, I have noticed not only how great their products are but also how many of the current trends they are embracing. Somerville Scarves make hand screen printed scarves (obviously!) and cushions in really great bold, contemporary designs. Their products are available on their website and also one of my favourite online stores Not On The High Street:

I’ve just come across this fantastic website www.todryfor.com. It sells nothing but teatowels from a range of really cool designers, including some I’ve already mentioned like Dandy Star and Lush Designs. But also – look how many trends  one website manages to hit with its designs – Playing cards, Alphabet, Britain, Love AND Folk!

What with the current trend for alphabets I thought I would share a piece of work I did based on this theme. While I can’t proclaim to be on trend (I did this months ago…!) the East End Arts Club are once again bang up to date. The next show, opening next month is based on the 26 letters of the alphabet and once again there will be a selection of limited editions and originals. I will be creating something new and keeping my fingers crossed it will be selected so watch this space for that and further details of the exhibition.

This next piece is something I did  more recently, it was actually the starting point for my ‘Love & Sex’ show exhibit. It was a digital version based on the above but I thought it looked too busy and couldn’t get the colours right (I’m quite new to this digital malarky…) I decided the most successful part of it was the playing card element in some of the letters…so thats how the playing card imagery (posted earlier) came about!

This is another trend with a huge following at the moment. Again following on from the popularity of general typeface design, the alphabet is experiencing great popularity in everything from wall decor to jewellery and ceramics
